Intro to BC Energy Step Code

The BC Energy Step Code program is a path which helps BC meet its goal that all buildings be net-zero energy ready by 2032. Canada’s goal is by 2050.

The BC Energy Step Code provides builders with a more flexible option to comply with the new energy efficiency requirements of the BC Building Code. This is referred to as the performance path. The performance path allows builders and designers to do trade offs etc.

BC Energy Step Code

To reach each step buildings are compared to the ERS Reference House. The ERS Reference House is different in each climate zone and by HDD (Heating Degree Days). The ERS Reference House is based on the same design built to min. code requirements as per the National Building Code of Canada.

Why does energy efficiency matter?  Why should we care?

Energy efficient homes are affordable to operate, comfortable, healthy for the occupants, durable and many more things. Energy efficient homes are also as airtight as possible which allows for smaller mechanical equipment for heating & cooling. These homes use the house-as-a-system approach with a heavy focus on the thermal envelope.

BC Energy Step Code Metrics – Performance Based – Part 9 Building Code Construction - The BC Energy Step Code uses three metrics to evaluate the home.

Building Envelope is measured by the TEDI. (Thermal Energy Demand Intensity)

Equipment & Systems is measured by the MEUI or % less than ERS Reference Home.

Air tightness is measured by Air Changes per hour at 50 Pascals – ACH50. This is how many time the entire house volume of air is replaced with outside air.
